Thoughts on Louise Bourgeois

I was given the article, "The Spider's Web" Louise Bourgeois and her Art by a teacher after a crit. In the article there is a quote from the artist on her personal psychological difficulties "Women are losers. They are beggars, in spite of women's lib." Much of her work is in protest of such a fate. Bourgeois was the last of three girls and named after her father as her mother felt guilty for not providing a boy for her husband. Louise (her father's name was Louis) felt, "I was suppose to make myself forgiven for being a girl". She was inturn her father's favorite and his spitting image.
I am the middle of three girls in my family. I too am my father's daughter. Growing up I demonstrated my father's athletic capabilities, physical appearance, sarcasm, and logical nature. I felt i needed to fill the spot of a son for my father.Although I am not bitter and take a certain pride in the matter I can certainly relate to Bourgeois's conflicts with identity. After all, Am I not a woman? It's a constant battle between logic and emotion, a sort of double-consciousness if you will...The struggle continues
